The most common formulation for foundations today is the liquid foundation, there are quite a few different options for the application method. No option is more correct than the other, though some could be a better choice for your aspired outcome. So, it really comes down to a few personal preferences, lifestyle, time available, wanted coverage, and the look and finish. Below I have broken down each method for you and how to achieve it.. At the end I have added a few videos showing some of the different application methods on myself, hope that helps.
How to apply liquid foundation with your hands.
This first option is my favourite, with a beauty sponge being a close second. Hands are natural, they clean up easily, and it’s quick right! Please start with freshly washed hands, add a little foundation to the back of your hand and then dab it in dots around the face. Next using your fingertips blend it in with some patting motions to ensure it’s all well blended.
How to apply liquid foundation with a tapered foundation brush
A tapered foundation brush is often flatter and to be honest not my favourite option, as they can be a bit more troublesome with leaving lines on the face. I find it harder to get a smooth look. The tip is to apply in a downward motion with a few tap tap motions to blend and press the foundation into the skin.
How to apply liquid foundation with a stippling brush
A stippling brush is my choice when using a makeup brush to apply liquid foundation, because they are quick to work with. Start by dotting the foundation around the face with your finger, or you could dap the brush straight in the product from your hand. Blending in the foundation with circular motions, which help to leave no streaking.
How to apply liquid foundation with a makeup sponge
Probably the most popular method now with the rise of the ‘beauty blender’ sponge, but there are many options out there. One of my favourites is the Fenty Beauty Sponge. Start with your sponge damp, run it under the tap and give it some good squeezes to get the water out. I add a few dots of foundation all over my face, then blend it in with my fingers. I then start tapping the sponge over my face. Continue tapping for more coverage with a little extra foundation if needed, if other areas need thinning out, swipe outwards.
How to prep your skin for liquid foundation
You always want to have recently hydrated skin, so apply shortly after your skincare routine and sunscreen application. Or if that was a few hours ago maybe a facial mist to dampen the skin and help the foundation to be applied smoother. Of course, you could use a primer as well to set up your skin for foundation. Primers can offer different things some will hydrate it; others will help with oil shine control, and some help with texture ‘filling in pores’ it depends on your skin type and desires.
How to remove your liquid foundation at the end of the day
A double cleanse is the only way to go, when you are wearing makeup, use the first cleanser to break down the makeup, an oil or balm cleanser type are fantastic for this. The second cleanser will then clean your skin, a gel or gentle foaming cleanser is really beautiful.
