Beauty Trends for 2021 and a 2020 Recap!

by | Jan 3, 2021 | LIFE, MAKEUP, SKINCARE

Undoughtably, a lot of global changes, happened this year, and notable beauty world moments for sure! Let me remind you of all the trends, dramas and discussions that occurred last year. As well as what I think we are going to see in the coming year!

The Recap:

The rise of science

Last year across social media, I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing more science input everywhere! People want the truth, and that’s what science aims for right! More cosmetic formulators, cosmetic regulators and dermatologists have come onto social media to help cut the crap and ‘misinformation’ which is also a new word at the moment.

Most, people have taken this scientific approach with open arms, real factual, evidence-based, clinical trials and discussions, finally!

The TikTok / Cerave movement

Tiktok started out with dancing content and expand to money, investing and dermatologists, (well my feed anyway), before it got band in Hong Kong.

The new cool kid’s app has boomed, and it could be where Cerave became cool, but somehow through social media, this excellent but bland sensitive skincare brand is on the lips of every teen and skincare addict alike.

Skinfluancer

Skincare influencers have a new term ‘skinfluanser’, beautiful skincare porn on Instagram accounts are in the masses now! Great for reviews and discovering the hot new skincare and sunscreen!

Celebrity Launches

Sooooo many of these popped up and it can’t be because of the pandemic these products would had to have been in development for a few years before. Skincare and makeup brands from celebrities are so abundant; it’s almost like, ok we are good now, hold off for a year or two.

Here are just a few!

Jennifer Lopez – J-Lo Beauty

Rihanna – Fenty Skin

Pharrell William – Humanrace

Alicia Keys – Keys Soulcare

Selena Gomez – Rare

Lauren Conrad – Lauren Conrad Beauty

Less lipstick and more self-care skincare

I could never have expected to have now a wardrobe of reusable face masks and a box full of dormant lipsticks. But it’s true; we wore a lot less lipsticks, let’s face it their not practical under the face masks and we opted to spend our money on skincare in 2020, which is self-care.

The fragrance in skincare debate

This kicked off big a few months ago, with the launch of Fenty Beauty skincare, having fragrance in skincare the discussions online were everywhere! I even did an article on my thoughts on fragrance.

Purito SPF levels

Possibly a more niche ‘event’ but within the sunscreen and Korean skincare lovers, BIG talk happened over this shocking discovery. People speculated if their two UV filler sunscreen was, in fact, SPF50+ and two independent lad studies where done to show it only had SPF19!!  We were all so saddened that our favourite is no more.

The brand’s response has been good though they acknowledged this problem and did there own testing that showed around SPF29, more but still not enough, they have offered a refund to anyone that purchased from June 1, 2020, to December 9, 2020.  Great to see them acknowledging the issue and working on it.

The launch of this blog! theBEAUTYtalk

Um, one of the most exciting things to hit the beauty world is the launch of theBEAUTYtalk (my blog). Jokes we are tiny here, and that’s ok, I love my new found joy of beauty writing!

beauty trends for 2021

The predicaments:

More Inclusivity

I think we will see even more of this, and not just with foundation shades. More influencers are vowing not to use products and ranges that don’t have colours for all their followers and their different skin tones.

Eye Makeup

The eyes have the floor, cheeks and lips take the backseat. While we have changed our calendars, the COVID-19 virus does not live by such rules, so in 2021 well keep those masks up and express with the eyes.

Eye makeup will continue to bloom with brighter liner shades and multi-chromatic eye shadows.

VR Beauty Shopping

Because of going out less or hygiene reasons, VR makeup try-on style services will be bigger in the future. I know it’s getting bigger in China and the one I have had the best experience with is the Benefit Cosmetics website, I have tried on there brow products on the site, it’s quite good.

Refillable and Sustainable Packaging

With a push from consumers for less plastic, it’s never really that easy, for example, glass packaging is not necessarily more environmentally friendly. Brands are taking this seriously and producing designs with less packaging or offering refillable options for customers current bottles at home like Locitaine -they do so well with their ‘Eco-Refills’

Subscription and Monthly Boxes

The convenience and fun of having a box of new products delivered to you has been a hit in recent years and is continuously growing. More brands will adopt this style of marketing in the future, I hope they will be able to be more customisable to each person’s skin colour and type, this will also help prevent waste.

Personalised Skincare

Research is showing people like the idea of a more personalised approach to there skincare routines. Custom made serums in store for your skin or freshly mixed active ingredients tailored to you, and new technology is coming in this space for sure.
