Blonde humans, I feel your pain. I have been through a LOT of dud brow products that just never worked for me; it’s not the formulas or staying power, it’s always the COLOR UNDERTONE!
Undertone is the single most hardest element that the majority of brands don’t get right in blonde brow products. So what even is undertone in this context? It’s a little hard to describe… it’s when you look at a color and it has warmth (looks kind of reddish) or cool (usually described as ashy) tones. You can tell as soon as you have finished your face and step out into natural light and your partner says ‘why are your eyebrows looking RED?’ Arghhh yep another product you thought would work but obviously NOT.
As a rule I stay away from asian brands when looking for blonde or light brown brow products ; I love them for other product categories just not brows. I’ve learnt this is because often girls have their hair dyed a warm dark brown shade in Asia, red/warm toned brow products go great with this, but not so great for someone with naturally blonde or light brown hair.
My favorite and biggest recommendation is, unsurprisingly, Benefit Cosmetics. They have been in the brow game for years, before it was cool. Not only do they have a large shade range but also a vast selection of different brow products. My go-to is the Precisely My Brow Pencil in shade 2.5 Neutral Blonde. It’s the perfect blonde shade with no warmth in the undertones; completely cool. Another fave is the Gimme Brow in shade 3, it picks up little fine hairs and colors them all in, giving you the big fluffy brows we long for.
M.A.C have also figured out the blonde brow game! I recommend the trying the shades ‘Fling’ and ‘Omega’. These shades are available in several different products: the Eye Brow Styler, Brow Sculpt and Veluxe Brow liner. Each have a different type of formula – you’re bound to find one that suits you! .
Other brands I recommend having a look at are Zoeva, L’Oreal and NYX.
And finally…keep in mind these key points when shopping for blonde brow products:
- Apply it! Check it in natural light on your brows, or even a swatch on the back of your hand if you don’t fancy doing your eyebrows in store…
- Go around the store with swatches of a few shades on your hand; you will soon see which ones are coming out too warm in tone.
- Ignore anything that says ‘golden’ in the shade name.
