Step by Step: How to Create the Smoked Liner Look

by | Sep 6, 2020 | MAKEUP

Sexy yet not high maintenance, it’s what everyone looks for in a partner. Well, this is how I think of this eye makeup look; I call it the ‘Smoked Liner’. You’ve got a classic cat-eye shape without the worry of keeping it looking perfect for 8hrs. Here’s a step by step to achieve it.

Type of eyeliner to use for this look:

The key to this smoked liner look is selecting the right type of eyeliner for the job. Liquid eyeliner is no good here – it’s too sharp and sets too quickly. You want to be using a waterproof gel-type pencil, the ones that set but you have time to smudge in.

Step 1: Start from where the upper and lower eyelids meet on the outer corner of your eye. Imagine your lower lash line extending towards the brow, and draw a small flick like in image two.

Step 2: Next draw a thin line along the top lash line, like in image three, and connect it to the flick created in step 1. How far you take the top line towards the inner corner is dependent on your eye shape (it doesn’t have to go all the way to the inner corner) – have a play and see what suits you.

REMEMBER: these lines don’t have to be ‘perfect’ –  as we’re going to smudge in the next step.

Step 3: Grab a small detail smudger brush and buff along the line vertically, when coming to the end of it, help the wing by extending your buffing strokes up and out. After using the brush, you could even use a finger, like in photo six, to soften the edges further.

TIP: Do one eye at a time. You are working with a waterproof liner,  and they set after a certain amount of time, (how quick is brand dependent). Once set they won’t smudge well, so just focus on one eye before moving on to the other.

That’s it! Easy! I would just add a nice coat of mascara to finish off the look.
