At the current time of writing… the world is dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. The majority of us are all hanging around indoors with nowhere to go and nothing to do. Aahhem want something to do? Wash your makeup brushes – I BET they need doing, right?
I promise you already have all the tools at home for this. Well I hope so… if you wash your dishes that is… because today, I’m saying wash them with dishwashing liquid. No fancy cleaners or specific gadgets needed, just normal super basic (and cheap – bonus) dish soap . I have cleaned my kit brushes like this for years; some of my brushes are over 7 years old and still perfectly fine!
I hear you saying… but won’t that dry them out? Don’t I need to use a specific makeup brush cleaner? Answer is no and no! Trust me, I wash brushes endlessly, – i.e. between every client and dish soap hasn’t let me down yet!
So here’s how to do it!
Prep: I do mine in the kitchen under a running tap . First I place a piece of paper towel to the side, to have a space to lay the washed brushes out to dry. Then I squeeze bit of dishwashing liquid on the bench near the tap.
Now, the below is absolutely self-explanatory… but we have to get the basics right, right?!
Step 1: Wet brush
Step 2: Dab the brush into the soap on the bench
Step 3: Massage and swirl in hand
Step 4: Rinse in the water and squeeze the excess water out
Step 5: Lay on paper towel to dry
Leave the brushes spread out on the towel and by morning they are dry and ready to use again. That’s it!
Please try to do this at lest every 2 weeks – it’s super important for skin hygiene.
Pro Tip: If you’ve used a strong cream eye product and it’s just not coming out, grab some olive oil and a cup. Mix about a tsp of olive oil in with some water. Then swish your brush around, give the brushes a massage, even let it sit for 5 mins. In the oil-water solution. Come back and wash out all the oil with dish soap; the olive oil should help lift the cream out, as they are usually oil based.
