1. Foundation goes all over the face.
It doesn’t have to! Especially if you’re wanting to achieve a natural, no-makeup look. Take a look at your skin. Along the sides of your face near the ears or forehead (basically around the edges!) you often don’t need a lot of coverage… When people look at you, they see your eyes first and go outwards from there, so the centre is where I focus on applying skin correcting products such as foundation and concealer. I use them to correct dark under eyes, veiny eyelids, red nose and then blend outwards. A full blanket of foundation is rarely needed.
2. Shimmer is only for the young.
Not true. I live by the belief there are no rules for makeup. If you find yourself in the later stages of life, firstly embrace it, not everyone gets the chance! #thankful. I would opt for finer milled shimmer eyeshadow products though; large chunky sparkles will do no favours for skin texture.
3. Makeup doesn’t expire.
It definitely does!. Hopefully, you know this already – makeup products expire for a couple of reasons a) hygiene b) effectiveness as a product. As a general rule, I would say you should be changing mascara around every three months. Powder and eyeshadows definitely can live on a lot longer, but cream and liquid makeup items do need to be used up or thrown out after 3mo or so. Bacteria can grow, products can stop performing, colours will separate etc. Don’t overbuy, and use up what you have first, so you don’t end up having too many expired products to chuck!
How to know the expiry? Mostly they have a little shape of a jar with an open lid and a number for the months like (30M)
4. Brushes are better than hands.
Not always, although definitely a valid point for a lot of eyeshadow work. However, often with complexion products like foundation and concealer especially, I tend to use my hands. It helps melt the products well into the skin. Even with cream blush and bronzers, you can work with your fingertips. Just make sure to have super clean hands of course!
5. Pumping your mascara wand, to get rid of clumps
You know what I mean, by pulling the wand in and out of the tube it feels like you’re getting more product or getting rid of clumps? Doing this is only shortening the life of your mascara, making it dry out faster by pumping more air into it. If you find you’re getting clumps or not enough product, I find it usually means it’s time for a new mascara!
