Why makeup wipes are bad for your skin and the planet

by | May 24, 2020 | SKINCARE

They may have on the packaging ‘makeup remover’, but I can assure you they do not CLEAN your skin.

Queen Caroline Hirons always says something along the lines of ‘they are only for flights, fannies and festivals’. Could not agree more, and if you don’t know who Caroline is, get your butt over to any of her channels stat, as she would say.  Caroline’s Blog and Youtube

If the thought of the environmental damage face wipes have on the earth is not enough to stop you, think of the skin damage you could be potentially causing.

The long-term trauma to the skin is a frightening thought. The daily rubbing at your face with the face wipe means you’re essentially exfoliating it daily or possibly twice a day! Because you’re not using actual water to wash your face, you’re leaving residual grime, oil and the cleaning/wipe ingredients on your skin all night, yuk! Those ingredients should not be sitting on your skin; they often contain strong drying chemicals that strip the skin messing with your skins PH.

Here are some alternative ways to clean your face at the end of the day and some of my favourite products.

Cleansing Balms and Oils

Cleansing Balms/ Oils, in my opinion,  are the best for heavy makeup days, they allow you to get in there and massage off all the makeup. Start with the balm/oil on dry skin, massage well, and wash off with wet face cloth.

Cleaning Gels

Cleanings Gels, are lighter, so people with oiler skin types like them often, over the oil cleaner, I like both. Use them on damp skin, rub in, rinse off with water and hands or with a face cloth.

How to Double Cleanse

The best method to ensure properly cleansed skin is to double cleanse, especially when wearing sunscreen (which you should be doing every day) and makeup. In the morning it’s fine to do a single light cleanse. Now, to double cleanse, I start with the balm or oil cleanser to break down the makeup and sunscreen, massage in and wash off. Then go in with your second option like a gel to then clean your skin.

I know it may seem little more of a task, but this routine will be kinder to the environment and your skin will thank you! Hopefully, now you’re ready to break up with those face wipes!
